Overview of Features
The Celestron CPC 800XLT is a high-magnification computerized telescope whose focal length is 2032mm. The 8-inches wide aluminum C8 optical tube is features high-quality Starbright-XLT multicoating. The optical tube is supported on a dual-arm computerized forkmount which can be operated using either EQ mode or Azimuth mode.
The telescope assembly, without including the tripod assembly, has a length of 31 inches, and measures 21 inches wide and 26 inches high. The fully set-up ready-to-use telescope weighs about 64 pounds, without additional accessories. However, the shipping weight is approximately 105.8 pounds.
Celestron CPC 800XLT is shipped in 2 boxes; the telescope box, and the double-box tripod assembly box. In the telescope box, the Celestron tube is well packaged inside high-density foam, with its accessories being packaged separately on the top section of the foam. These accessories include a user manual, NexRemote CD, serial PC cable, handbox holder, a quick-release finderscope holder, finderscope, DC cord, 40mm Plossl, 1.25 inches star diagonal, and a 1.25 inches visual back.
The tripod assembly is well encased in double boxes, alongside the spreader and tripod assembly manual. Double boxes are used because they allow for the contents and accessories to be well spaced, hence allowing for easy shipping without fear of the contents smashing into each other and breaking.
The spreader is made from hardened plastic, and the three radial arms are well angulated to allow for optimal placement of the tripod stands. It also features contours that allow it to spread the weight, or load, across a wide surface. The angles between any two radial arms is approximately 120 degrees, and this allows individual tripod stands to be positioned as far away from each other as possible, and this in turn allows the three tripod stands to create a wide ground-level support base on which the entire telescope rests. The spreader also allows the load on the tripod head to be spread equally into the three tripod stands.
The tripod head features well-spaced attachment bolts, with the area around each bolt totally cleared so as to allow the base of the telescope to be easily aligned to its corresponding bolt area. This seamless alignment allows for a straightforward insertion of the base into the tripod, as well as enables it to be mounted firmly on an even surface. This tripod head also features an inbuilt compass. Additionally, the spring-loaded attachment bolts allows for an easy installation process, in addition to holding loose bolts captive so that they do not drop down.
The tripod head also features a series of depressions. These are called locating depressions, and the user can easily use them to orient the telescope tube towards a preferred position. The tripod head, spreader, and well-positioned tripod stands work together to give this telescope a firm and solid drive base.
The dual-fork type mount is supported on an ultra-wide gliding base. This gliding base rests on the tripod head, and also features an easy-to-use rotating control panel. At the middle of this base is a wheel which operates the Azimuth clutch. Relatedly, the fork arm incorporates a finger-friendly wheel that is used to operate the DEC clutch. Additionally, the well-positioned telescope handles allows the user to easily maneuver the optical tube.
The SkyAlign system allows the user to easily align the telescope to objects being observed. The user also benefits from the NexRemote, which is a software package that allows the telescope to be controlled using a personal computer.
Internal baffling and a low-magnification mirror work together to improve the peripheral brightness of images, thus making this telescope suitable for astrophotography.
Who is it Suitable for?
This telescope can be easily set-up by any user who can follow the instructions laid down in the user manual. Moreover, computerization and the SkyAlign system makes this an easy-to-use telescope. Celestron CPC 800XLT telescope is designed to be used by all types of astronomers, from astronomy enthusiasts, beginner astronomers, mid-level astronomers, and professional astronomers. Basically, any adult can use it so long as the laid-down instructions are followed.
How it Works
The telescope first needs to be set-up. Afterwards, the user must power the telescope using a 12-volt power supply, which must be acquired separately as the telescope is shipped without its own power supply. However, Celestron sells a product dubbed Celestron Power Bank, which can power the telescope well. Thereafter, the telescope is directed to an object in the sky. The 8×50 finderscope can help the user locate specific astronomical objects.
Once the object of interest is located and the telescope focused on it. The light from the object enter the telescope through the 203.2mm wide aperture and passes through the objective lens and onto the concave mirror. The mirror reflects and concentrates it onto a secondary mirror, which changes the light direction so that light is focused onto the eyepiece lens. The observer then views the image through the eyepiece lens.
The average retail cost of the Celestron CPC 800XLT telescope is about USD2000. Though this price tag may seem high, in reality it is not especially if the features of this telescope are taken into account. This product is a high-end Schmidt Cassegrain telescope that uses third-generation computer-operated mount, and also incorporates easy-to-use features through its SkyAlign and 16-channel GPS receiver system. Moreover, it is made from durable, high-quality materials and its ergonomic design renders it useful to all astronomers. Therefore, the benefits provided by the Celestron CPC 800XLT telescope far surpasses the price tag, and this product can be rated as having a superb price-to-quality ratio.
